From 1910-1919, the city seven miles of beach served as long beach airport. Landings and takeoffs of long beach airport were best made at low tides, and it was common to see fabric-covered biplanes flying off the sand amidst ocean spray. In 1919, local aviator Earl Daugherty opened a 20 acre flying field for his flight training school at "Chateau Thierry." Located at Bixby Road and Long Beach Boulevard, it opened on June 6, 1919. Interest in aviation grew and on July 16, 1920, the City of Long Beach contacted Daugherty about developing a 60 acre municipal flying field on land situated west of Long Beach Boulevard map and south of Willow Street.

Long beach airport is located five kilometers northeast of downtown Long Beach map, Long beach airport (LGB) is one of five commercial airports serving the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The airport is a hub for JetBlue Airways and is also home to Delta Connection. LGB offers non-stop flights to approximately a dozen U.S. destinations. In 2014, more than 2.8 million travelers passed through Long Beach Airport. Due to local noise protection ordinances, the airport is limited to 41 commercial and 25 regional flights per day.
Long beach airport has five runways and a single terminal divided into two halls: North Hall and South Hall. In all, there are 14 gates. Traveller amenities include several restaurants and a retail store. For ground transportation, travellers have a choice of taxis, shared shuttles, buses and rental vehicles. Long Beach Airport features only one terminal and four commercial airlines, long beach makes air travel to Anaheim a breeze. Known for its Streamline Moderne architecture, the terminal is a Cultural Heritage Landmark, as well as home for Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and US Airways. LGB flies approximately 250,000 people per month from Long Beach, CA, to destinations all over the country map, with an average of 35 flights a day. The main terminal is easy to use and offers curbside check-in, two boarding lounges, and three baggage claim areas.
