The Zoo in LA map is home to more than 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles representing more than 270 different species, of which more than 58 are endangered. In addition, the LA Zoo botanical collection comprises several planted gardens and over 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants. The Zoo receives nearly 1.8 million visitors per year and is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles. The daily management of the LA Zoo is overseen by Chief Executive Officer & Zoo Director Denise M. Verret. The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
 
The LA Zoo is located in the heart of the nation second-largest city map. Each year 1.3 million visitors pass through the gates to view a collection of 1,200 animals from around the world. When the LA Zoo opened in November 1966, 80,000 Angelenos attended the grand opening. Several of the animals that were in the Zoo on opening day have lived long lived here including elephant Gita, alligator Methuselah, and Indian rhino Herman. The LA Zoo was the first major zoo in the United States to bar visitors from feeding the animals.
